Terrorism has even made people develop the fear of going to public places because nobody knows when and where the next tragedy will occur. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Safe Cities Index (SCI) has ranked some cities across the world in terms of their digital security, health security, infrastructure and personal safety. While analyzing a city’s resilience, the Safe Cities Index looked at the emergency services available in the city, transport facilities, catastrophe insurance, disaster-risk development and cyber-security preparedness.

Listed below are the top 20 safest cities in the world.

20. Hong Kong

The city of Hong Kong, home to 7.4 million people, has been in the spotlight for being a safe place for travelers, tourists, and expats. When one is in the city, asides being cautious, one doesn’t have to necessarily worry about crime because the safety standards are very high.

19. Zurich

As a whole, Swiss cities are generally very safe to visit. Zurich sees very little tourist crime; however, pick pocketing is common on public transportation and at airports.

Overall, the city has a very low crime rate because Switzerland also has a reputation for being of the safest countries in Europe.

The overall crime rate in Sydney is moderately low and while the city is not necessarily known for its crime rate, the still has the highest crime rate in all of New South Wales. Maybe that’s to show that Australia is a safe country after all.

Amsterdam is the weirdest city I’ve ever known. The city is the capital and most populous city of The Netherlands with a population of over 800,000. Amsterdam is not a dangerous country at all which is why it’s 4th on this list of the world’s safest cities. There is not a lot of crime in Amsterdam as marijuana and prostitution are both legalized in the country.

3. Osaka

Osaka is one of the major Japanese cities and it is very safe, even ranking as the third safest city in the world. In Osaka, the overall crime risk is very low. There is a very low chance of getting mugged or kidnapped so that means you can walk at any time of the day though some areas are best to be avoided at night.

It is definitely one of the safest countries in Asia to travel to but it is very wise that when you travel to this city, your valuables are well kept, since the most common type of crime is petty theft.

1. Tokyo

Tokyo has served as the Japanese capital since 1869 and as of 2018, the Greater Tokyo Area ranked as the most populous metropolitan area in the world. The metropolis (a very large city), according to information by World Atlas has a population of approximately 13.7 million, making it one of the most populous cities in the world.

It is a well-established fact that Japan has one of the lowest overall crime rates in the world. When it comes to violent crimes, Tokyo is unarguably the safest of all the large metropolitan cities so it is generally a safe place for visitors to go.
